Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director, Sebastian Kehl, has confirmed that the club was unable to secure a buy option clause for either Jadon Sancho or Ian Maatsen. Kehl acknowledged the club’s desire to include such an option in the negotiations but admitted that the circumstances did not allow for it.
“We naturally advocated for an option with Sancho and Maatsen but the negotiating position was not such that we could implement it… and so we will accept it for now,” Kehl stated, indicating that Dortmund will proceed without the buy option for the two players.
The absence of a buy option means that Dortmund will not have a predetermined agreement to purchase the players outright at the end of their loan spells. This could potentially lead to further negotiations or bidding wars should the club wish to retain their services permanently in the future.
