Brighton & Hove Albion secured a dramatic 3-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the Amex Stadium, overturning a two-goal deficit in the second half. Georginio Rutter played a pivotal role, scoring once and assisting another goal, to guide Brighton to their fifth consecutive win across all competitions.
First Half: Tottenham’s Early Dominance
Tottenham took control in the first half, with Brennan Johnson netting his sixth consecutive goal, followed by James Maddison’s strike, which slipped through Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s grasp. Maddison’s earlier goal was disallowed due to an offside call against Pedro Porro.
Second Half: Brighton’s Resurgence
Brighton responded swiftly after the break. Yankuba Minteh capitalised on a defensive error by Destiny Udogie to reduce the deficit. Rutter then set up Kaoru Mitoma, who skilfully manoeuvred past Tottenham’s defence to equalise. Rutter’s persistence led to a cross that deflected off Rodrigo Bentancur, allowing Danny Welbeck to head in the decisive goal.
Defensive Adjustments and Tactical Changes
Brighton’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, addressed defensive vulnerabilities by substituting Ferdi Kadioglu with Pervis Estupinan at half-time. Estupinan’s introduction provided both defensive stability and an assist for Minteh’s goal. Tottenham’s defensive frailties were evident, with Udogie and Cristiano Romero struggling against Brighton’s attack, and Micky van de Ven unable to prevent Rutter’s equaliser.
This victory propels Brighton to sixth place in the league, three spots above Tottenham, highlighting the contrasting fortunes of the two teams.
