Football Club Roma
The football club Roma, officially known as Associazione Sportiva Roma, is a professional football club based in Rome, Italy. The club was founded on 22 July 1927 through a merger of three clubs: Roman FC, SS Alba-Audace, and Fortitudo-Pro Roma SGS. Since then, Roma has become one of the most prominent clubs in Italian football.
Stadio Olimpico
Roma’s home ground is the Stadio Olimpico, located in the Foro Italico district in northern Rome. The stadium, which was inaugurated in 1937, has a capacity of over 70,000 spectators and is shared with the city’s other major football club, Lazio. The Stadio Olimpico has hosted several major international events, including the final of the 1990 Football World Cup.
Legendary Coaches and Players
Roma has had several prominent coaches and players over the years. Among the most notable coaches are Nils Liedholm and Fabio Capello. Liedholm, a former Swedish footballer, led the club to its second Serie A title in 1983. Capello, on the other hand, led Roma to its third Serie A title in 2001.
Some of the most notable players include Francesco Totti, Daniele De Rossi, and Gabriel Batistuta. Totti, who played for Roma from 1992 to 2017, is the club’s most prominent player and its all-time top scorer. De Rossi, another product of Roma’s youth academy, played for the club for over 15 years and is the player with the second most appearances for the club. Batistuta, an Argentine striker, played for Roma between 2000 and 2003 and was a key player in the club’s Serie A title in 2001.
UEFA Champions League Highlights
Roma has had several notable moments in the UEFA Champions League. The club reached the final of the tournament in 1984, where they lost to Liverpool on penalties. Roma has also reached the quarterfinals of the tournament several times, most recently in 2018.
Nicknames and Rivalries
Roma is widely known as “I Giallorossi” (The Yellow-Reds) due to their traditional red and gold coloured shirts. The club has an intense rivalry with Lazio, the other major football club in Rome. This rivalry, known as the Derby della Capitale (Capital Derby), is one of the most passionate and bitter in Italian football.
